Muscular Balance is a subject in the realm of health and fitness that has been extremely overlooked. There are thousands of books on the market that provide a perspective on how to build muscle and burn fat. However; they don’t talk about building muscle in proportion. Most of the time, we build muscle that is detrimental to our bodies. It is either overdeveloped or not proportionate to our frame. Fitness magazine headlines always read; “Bigger Shoulders”, “Massive Chest” and “Bulging Biceps”. When have you ever seen headlines that read; “More Balanced Shoulders” or “Create a More Proportional Chest and Back”? Also, our vanity has taken over and we mostly train what we can see in the mirror.
Achieving Muscular Balance is as much an art as it is a science. Scientifically there are no exact measurements of the ideal proportions. Balance is personal, it’s relative to you. The Art is the creation of a visual aesthetic and awareness within these muscles and muscle groups. There are web sites that feature an “ideal proportion” calculator that determine optimal size through measurement. There are just too many other variables (limb length, height, etc.) to consider for this to be accurate. Overall muscular balance takes the entire body into account. You must look at the body as a series of muscles and muscle groups that are interconnected.
To achieve Muscular Balance, follow the 3 Balance Principles:
